Professor Vassilios G. Agelidis was born in Serres, Greece. He received the B.Eng. Degree in electrical engineering from the Democritus University of Thrace, Greece, in 1988. He earned a master’s in applied science degree from Concordia University, Montreal, Quebec, Canada, in 1992, and a PhD degree in electrical engineering from Curtin University, Perth, Western Australia, in 1997. He also holds a graduate diploma in business administration from the Curtin Graduate School of Business, Australia (2000), and a postgraduate diploma for teaching in the higher education sector (1994).

Prof. Agelidis has worked at Curtin University, (1993–1999), initially as Associate Lecturer, then as Lecturer and finally as Senior Lecturer; the University of Glasgow, U.K. (2000–2004) as Senior Lecturer and Research Manager for the Glasgow-Strathclyde Centre for Economic Renewable Power Delivery; Murdoch University, Perth, Australia (2005–2006) as Professor and Chair of Power Engineering; the University of Sydney, Australia (2007–2010), where he held the industry-funded EnergyAustralia Chair in Power Engineering; the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Sydney, Australia (2010-2016) as the Director of the Australian Energy Research Institute and Chair in Power Engineering Professor. In 2015, he was with the ABB Corporate Research Centre, Västerås, Sweden, for a 6-month sabbatical. He also was a partial appointment researcher with ABB in Västerås, Sweden from September 2017 to February 2018. From October 2016 to December 2020, he was a professor at the Centre for Electrical Power and Energy, Department of Electrical Engineering, Technical University of Denmark. He has also been a visiting research professor at Beijing Jiaotong University, China, from 2011-2017 under the Chinese Government’s High-End Experts Program. He was a visiting research professor at UNITEN, a private university in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, owned by Tenaga Nasional Berhad (Electricity utility). He acted as a member of the International Advisory Board of Beijing Jiaotong University (2012-2017) and was a member of UNITEN’s International Advisory Council (2017-2020). He is currently a visiting fellow professor (2021-2022) at the American College of Greece in Athens, Greece and is a Mentor to the Outstanding Academic Fellows Program (2019-2023) at the Norwegian Institute of Science and Technology (NTNU) Trondheim, Norway.

Dr. Agelidis has received numerous awards and recognitions including notably the 2010 Electrica Awards First Prize, May 2010, €50,000, the outcome of an international technology innovation contest organized by AREVA Transmission & Distribution headquartered in Paris, France. In 2007, an Endeavor Executive Award ($25,000) from the Department of Education, Science and Technology, Commonwealth of Australia enabled his stay at the Seoul National University of Technology, South Korea for three months performing research while understanding the culture of Korea. Professor Agelidis received the Advanced Research Fellowship from the U.K.’s Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council in 2004, probably the most competitive research fellowship awarded to the very few most promising young researchers in the UK. He was the Vice-President of Operations within the IEEE Power Electronics Society from 2006 to 2007. He was an Administrative Committee Member of the IEEE Power Electronics Society from 2007 to 2009 and the Technical Chair of the 39th IEEE Power Electronics Specialists Conference, Rhodes, Greece, 2008. He is a Fellow of the IEEE (Class of 2016), with the citation: for contributions to power electronics, renewable energy conversion and integration with electricity grid and the IET (UK). From 2017 to 2020 served two terms as a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Power Electronics Society.
