About the seminar

Stereotypes around Sparta portray a xenophobic, warfare-oriented society, with little concern for art, luxury, and cultural exchange. In this talk, I will use Hans Beck (2020) and Tamar Hodos’ (2023) frameworks of local and global to re-consider key material culture from within Sparta, as well as Spartan material culture found abroad. Ultimately, I argue for Sparta as a key paradigm for understanding how the ‘local’ and the ‘global’ unfold in tandem in the first millennium BCE Mediterranean.
