ACG 150

Overview

To pursue its mission of fostering Greece’s economic growth the Institute for Hellenic Growth and Prosperity (IHGP) houses Centers of Excellence in the areas of Food, Tourism & Leisure; Shipping, Logistics & Energy; and Sustainability; as well as the Research, Technology & Innovation Network (RTIN). These units target specific areas of the Greek economy, particularly those identified in the McKinsey group’s Greece: 10 Years Ahead report as poised for expansion in the coming decade – including transportation, tourism, leisure, agri-food and digital transformation – while promoting research and innovation within a framework for sustainable growth.

The IHGP seeks to sponsor research as well as scholarly and public discussions designed to promote the adoption of innovative and best international practice solutions to Greece’s economic challenges through such means as traditional publications, media productions (including social media), a bespoke website featuring archived publications and media productions, and conferences/seminars/symposia (real and virtual/electronic) that seek to bring public officials, academics (faculty and students), and business leaders together to address specific economic issues facing Greece and the world today.

Mission

To encourage economic growth at the national level, advancing private sector innovation and investment combined with public sector reforms informed by cutting edge research and founded in a European framework that facilitates sustainable growth and prosperity.

Vision

To position ACG as a leader in developing solutions for Greece based on innovation and on fundamental Hellenic principles of excellence (αρετή), stewardship/responsibility/sustainability (επιμέλεια) and liberty (ελευθερία), calling on Greece’s classical, Byzantine and modern heritage.

Impact

The IHGP works with the other ACG 150 units to impact economic and social change in Greece by:

Promoting the understanding of the continued success of market-based solutions to economic problems
Fostering the kinds of innovation in thought, technology and public policy that have characterized Hellenic culture for over 2,500 years
Emphasizing the necessary connection between responsible, sustainable economic development and a healthy and productive society
Focusing attention on the practices and self-analysis necessary to ensure that current economic and social development is consistent with Hellenic values
Recognizing that theory must be confirmed in practice and that ideology is no substitute for proven effectiveness under real-world conditions

Collaboration: Eudaimonia Initiative

The Eudaimonia Initiative links the two new interdisciplinary institutes created by the ACG 150 strategic plan—the IHGP and the Institute for Hellenic Culture and the Liberal Arts (IHCLA)—with ACG’s Institute of Public Health, which has an established record of reducing smoking in Greece substantially since 2015.

The three institutes will cooperate in a series of efforts to promote eudaimonia—or “human flourishing”—in Greece. In a related effort, on April 6, 2021, the IHGP hosted a symposium on “Public Health, the Greek Economy and Political Liberty: Balance, Priorities and Policies in the Age of Pandemics,” which featured the participation of leading figures from the private sector, health experts and policymakers.
