From May 26-28, 2025, three professors—Paraskevi Papadopoulou, Stella Apostolakis, and Alexia Polissidis—along with five students from The American College of Greece, participated in the 3rd edition of the BioMed-AI International Initiative Summer School, hosted at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) in Lyon, France.
The summer school, organized by the Digital Health Literacy & Policy Hub, focused on the theme Transforming Healthcare Through Artificial Intelligence: Opportunities, Challenges, and Ethical Frontiers. The event brought together researchers, healthcare professionals, legal experts, and policymakers to explore the latest advancements in Artificial Intelligence and its applications in healthcare.
We thank the organizing committee for the invitation, the IARC/WHO for hosting the summer school, and for the interesting tour of the IARC/WHO research facilities and labs; and all the participants for the transformative exchange of new scientific findings and the wonderful discussions we had during the workshops and networking sessions.
Professor Papadopoulou, who serves on the scientific committee for the BioMed-AI Summer School, along with Professors Apostolakis and Polissidis, presented their work through oral presentations and posters, providing valuable insights into the evolving landscape of digital health and AI. Additionally, Professors Papadopoulou and Apostolakis shared updates on the #SDG4U Erasmus+ project, highlighting its goals, progress, and future plans. The Center of Excellence in Sustainability (CoES) covered the professors’ expenses.
We would like to express our gratitude to Olga Tzortzatou-Nanopoulou, Christina Deligianni, Vasileios Zogopoulos, Danai Spentzou, and Zisis Kozlakidis for their collaboration and fruitful discussions during the event.
In addition, a special thank you to our students—Sophia Orfanou, Eirini Tzermpou, Athanasios Koranis, Iliana Salech, Georgia Bersi, Sofia Dafnomili, Foteini Kapoukranidou, and Nikolaos Koutsis- for their excellent work and enthusiasm in engaging with demanding research topics.
The BioMed-AI Summer School provided a comprehensive exposure to the advances in AI-driven digital health. Featuring lectures from top scientists and interactive workshops, the event left a lasting impact on all participants, furthering the collective mission of integrating AI into healthcare to achieve better patient outcomes and ethical solutions.
