In a significant collaborative effort, the Center of Excellence in Sustainability and the National Centre for Scientific Research (NCSR) Demokritos held a transformative 3-day masterclass titled “Climate Change and Security” from June 18-20, 2024. Hosted at the ACG premises under the auspices of the European Security and Defense College (ESDC), this event brought together senior decision-makers and experts from EU Member States and various EU institutions. The course aimed to deepen understanding among the 19 participants regarding the multifaceted threats posed by climate change to human societies, ecosystems, and economies, while also scrutinizing EU policies related to these challenges.
The sessions were marked by insightful presentations from eminent scholars and professionals. Key topics included the global implications of climate change, its economic threats, and its impact on energy security, as outlined by distinguished speakers such as Dr. Panos Vlachopoulos and Dr. Konstantinos Eleftheriadis. A special focus was placed on EU initiatives like the LIFE-IP AdaptInGR project, which addresses civil security through climate adaptation. The course also facilitated practical workshops on vulnerability assessment and the use of climate indicators for designing adaptation options, enhancing the participants’ capacity to tackle current and future environmental challenges effectively.
