The Francis Rich School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences of The American College of Greece co-hosted a two-day workshop on Orthodoxy, War and Human Rights, organized by Dr. Effie Fokas (International Relations and European Affairs Program, Deree-ACG) and Dr. Elizabeth Prodromou (International Studies, Boston College), on March 20-21, 2026. The workshop was the first stage in a project gathering a geographically diverse, interdisciplinary group of twenty scholars and practitioners to examine intersections between Orthodoxy, war and human rights.

Over two days of discussion at the ACG Plaka Building, this group explored issues of agency, voice, and complicity. The workshop was supported with seed funding from the International Orthodox Theological Association (IOTA) Colloquia Program, along with additional funding from the ACG Francis Rich School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, the ACG Institute for Hellenic Culture and the Liberal Arts (IHCLA); the ACG Institute for Global Affairs (IGA), and the Orthodox Christian Studies Center at Fordham University (New York, USA).

The distinguished participants included Dr. Spyridoula Athanasopoulou-Kypriou, Dr. George Demacopoulos, Dr. Nikolaos Dimitriadis, Dr. Effie Fokas, Dr. Tamara Grdzelidze, Dr. Valerie Karras, Dr. Eleni Kasselouri-Hatzivassiliadi, Rev. Dr. Prof. Philip LeMasters, Ms. Theodota Nantsou, Dr. Aristotle Papanikolaou, Dr. Peter Petkoff, Dr. Elizabeth Prodromou, Dr. Yuri Stoyanov, Dr. Dmitri Uzlaner, Hon. Evangelos Venizelos, and Dr. Gayle Woloschak. Four other members of the project were unable to attend. Results of the workshop will appear in a journal special issue and there are plans to follow up with a conference on the same topic in the US.
