Dr. Marina Sagnou

Dr. Marina Sagnou holds a BSc in Biology/Chemistry (1993, University of Surrey, UK) and a PhD in Medicinal Chemistry (1998, University of Portsmouth, UK) supported by a Bodossakis Foundation Scholarship. She is currently an associate researcher at the Institute of Biosciences and applications (IBA) of NCSR “Demokritos” and she also teaches General and Organic Chemistry at Deree-The American College of Greece. Her research focuses on the design, synthesis and biological evaluation of novel small organic molecules, natural products or organometallic complexes with potential target-specific pharmacological properties for: diagnosis and therapy of glioblastoma, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, reversal of multi-drug resistance, anticancer and antimicrobial activity. She has published 58 peer-reviewed publications and she is a co-inventor in 4 patents. She has acted as the co-ordinator, PI or partner in National and European projects, and received direct funding from pharmaceutical companies. She has collaborations with local companies in the medical, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and health sector. She is a founding member in two spin-off companies.
