DRONESS

DRONESS is an easy-to-use interface that was co-developed by SWiFT Lab Members in the context of EU project PAINLESS with the goal of optimizing wireless access based on UAV-mounted portable access points. It hence contributes to the design of an off-grid UAV-based mobile network in an intuitive way. It features both a standalone and a MATLAB-integrated version, accessed through the same interface: the input section is divided into four tabs, each dedicated to a different aspect of the optimization; the results tab appears about a minute after clicking “Run”, and it shows the optimal trajectory the UAVs should follow, the size of the energy generation and storage systems, the cost associated with each of these elements, and a comparison with an on-grid alternative. In order to improve the user experience, most of the input fields have been preconfigured, and are only shown when clicking on “Advanced settings”. The irradiation data needs to be on a minute basis, and should come in the same format as the data file.
