Research Area: Biomedical Science

The Biomedical Science Research Area covers research activities related to subject areas ranging from molecular biology, protein-DNA interactions and gene expression, microbiology, virology, structural biology/molecular biophysics and bioinformatics, cancer research, genetic diseases and rare diseases, research on environmental health issues, on big data analytics in bioinformatics, medicine, health and healthcare, the evolution of consciousness plus on Mediterranean biodiversity and green roofs.

The aim of this research area is to bridge internal and external research collaborations in biomedical science. Most of the activities are centered around the recently fully renovated Deree labs (the Biology lab, the Chemistry & Cell and Molecular Lab, and the Physical Sciences lab), which feature state-of-the-art infrastructure for science teaching and basic science research and host several researchers that work on a variety of research projects and studies either individually or collaboratively as part of a team.

 

Biography

Dr. Paraskevi Papadopoulou is Professor of Biology and Head of the Department of Science and Mathematics and the Biomedical Sciences Program at Deree-The American College of Greece (2020-2023). She has served as Head of the Department of Science, Technology and Mathematics at Deree-ACG (2008-2014). She made a significant contribution to the development of the Environmental Studies program and the Information Technology (IT) program at Deree-ACG (2010-12). She has coordinated the development of the Biomedical Sciences (BMS) program at Deree-ACG (2017-2019) and has served as the Program Coordinator of the BMS program (2020).

Her research activity covers a wide range of subject areas focusing on structural biology/molecular biophysics and bioinformatics and on structural and self-assembly studies of fibrous proteins.  She has also contributed to the development of genetic testing protocols for genetic diseases, such as Tuberous Sclerosis and Neurofibromatosis type 1.   Her current research engagement expands on environmental health issues, big data analytics in bioinformatics, medicine, health and healthcare, the evolution of consciousness plus on Mediterranean biodiversity and green roofs, and innovative teaching and learning methods in STEM disciplines.

Her research work has been reflected in over 50 scientific articles, papers and book chapters as well as in 3 books. She has served as book editor and as manuscript reviewer in several high-impact journals. She serves as Review Editor in Frontiers in Digital Health (Personalized Medicine). In addition, she teaches Introduction to Biology, Human Genetics, Cellular and Molecular Neurobiology, as well as courses in Research Methods for the Environmental Studies and Biomedical Sciences programs.

2021: Registered for the Graduate course and received a Certificate of Professional Education from Tufts Center for the Study of Drug Development – ACG Professional Certificate in Clinical Pharmacology, Drug Development and Regulation, 11 March – 24 March, 2021

2022: Selected to serve as member of the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Collaborator Network
