This parasitic antenna array uses one active / four passive patch antennas, which are strongly coupled with the active one. The coupling has been fixed so that the array generates a ~35o beamwidth beam pattern at 2.4 – 2.6 GHz carrier frequencies.
These printed patch arrays can be used in switch-beam mode, as shown in the prototype depicted below:
